ABSTRACT
A study of barriers to elementary education faced by rural girls of Rajasthan through field observations and interactions with inhabitants of scattered small habitations (Habitations: 10; subjects: 100) of rural Rajasthan were made. Rajasthan State of India is a part of Thar Desert and has feudal patriarchal traditions having a low sex ratio (922), which is far below the national average (933) and dismal female literacy rate (44.34%). The identified barriers were classified in terms of (i) attitudes and practices; (ii) indirect of hidden costs of schooling; (iii) location of the school away from home; (iv) low quality of school environment and teaching-learning process; (v) lack of enforcement of existing educational polices and laws. The study analyses the gender dimensions of identified barriers and makes recommendations to overcome them. The main recommendations are: (i) advocacy for alternative multilevel-learning-based unisex schools to be run by NGOs; (ii) social mobilization for girls’ education and women empowerment; (iii) gender audit of quality of education; (iv) training of women teachers and their placement and; (v) advocacy for compulsory education and labour laws.
