Teacher-created contextual rhymes develop phonemic awareness of language learning: Study

The work of Jaipur-based educator and researcher Dr Lalit Kishore on rhymes published in MyNews.in for pre-primary and elementray school children was picked up by Rhymes News (Sarah Rodman, Lowndes County, Ages, Goose) @ Oozey.com for dissemination through website www.oozey.com/rhymes/news.htm.

The website of Lowndes County School while referring to the news story of the work of Dr Kishore being accepted for a conference wrote that one of the basic elements of phonemic awareness (MyNews.in, India - Lalit Kishore) which could be developed with relevant teacher-developed rhymes which had be contextual and age-grade appropriate.

Since both the website and the online news portal are closed, here is the abstract of the research abstract "An action research with tickle rhymes" of Kishore for pre-school children.

Abstract: An action research was undertaken for re-introducing under-arm tickle with pre-school children (N=20; Age: 4-5 years; urban setting). It was done to rediscover the magic of tickle rhymes which have been forgotten due to formalization of educations and misplaced hurry to produce little adults. Five tickle rhymes were adapted and introduced with each rhyme (Duration: 45 seconds) sung by the teacher successively for each child and ending with an under-arm tickle. Then it was sung collectively through echo singing method. One rhyme was repeated for three days. After two weeks, it was found that most children (80%) repeated the rhyme at home and tickled their parents. The children also started talking about the school and the teacher at home. The parents (N=35) reacted positively (p<0.01, D.F.=2) to the intervention as revealed by the chi-square analysis

Keywords: Phonemic awareness, tickle rhymes, vocabulary building, singing as a pedagogical tool
