Teacher-made visual codes and their classroom use leads to better numeracy and literacy gains

A ‘field operations seminar’ (FOS) was organised for the researcher from Ansal University Gurugram, Bhanu (see the inset collage), on February 11, 2022 by Bhavi Nirman Samiti (BNS), Chaksu, from 10:00 hrs to 16:30 hrs consisting of interview with Rama Sharma who had been using text and visual codes or dual codes extensively both as a teacher and a trainer; and two small schools for drop-out and non-starters girls located in the small habitations of Banjara Muslim community (Kamal Ki Dhani; Karim Baksh Ki Dhani) in Niwai block. Besides, Rama Sharma, the other participants of the field seminar were Giriraj Sharma, Suresh Beniwal. Maina Rana, Ganesh Yogi, Poonam and this blogger.


The dual code rich classrooms were observed and students demonstrated their learning and cognitive skills in the form of mental work in operational problems in arithmetic and bilingual competence for which the the credit was given to the use of visual codes and their linkage to folk wall and floor arts 'mandana' for the abstract codes of language and mathematics. Teachers and community leaders were also interacted with to gather their reactions to the dual code learning.

The following outcomes were gathered as learning of the field operational seminar.


  • The learning process that moves from experiences with concrete objects to visual symbols to abstract symbols leads to better retention of subject matter

  • The proper use of visual codes results in better cognitive development and accelerated learning for over-age students

  • When drawn successively and use of doodles decorated by writing strokes, alphabets, numbers and cultural patterns, the cultural and aesthetic linkage gets established

  • Visual become the initial cognitive tools when linked to matching exercises both in peer-group learning situation and individual practice

  • The dynamic visual displays student-made origami pocket-holder charts and teacher-made visual and word cards when used for classroom activities lead to enhancement of multiple intelligence
