Teachers must make Dance Day as eventful learning experience for kids in the classroom: An example of non-dance use of dance

For teachers, International Dance Day (April 29) should be a day to go for providing an eventful learning expeience about dance as well its use for disciplary learning on on-going concepts in the their subject areas.

According to Dr Kishore, for promoting multiple intelligence based learning and art-integrated pedagogy in the classroom lessons, teachers must intervene to infuse dance in academics. The essence should the non-art use of art to develop content based kinaesthetic intelligence. Rhythmic communication of textual material and rhythmic flow of gestures associated with key phrases can serve the purpose.

He suggests that to begin with the teacher must try a few lesson studies to get a feel that what does it entail for integrate dance in academic learning for both cognitive and non-cognitive gains while advocating non-dance use of dance either for disciplinary learning or eventful learning on special days including the International Dance Day. Earlier he had used dance-based learning of four line poem om on 'little child' in Hindi with dance performance.

1. Create four-line poem with two words per line

2. Decides about the gestures for each line

3. Teach gesture-word association for spoken vocabulary building

4. Teach singing of poem

6. Teach singing with gestures and movement

9. Reinforce gesture-sight vocabulary through cards

10. Make children do gesture-word and word-word matching worksheet


After teacher has prepared the research lesson, it must be rehearsed in presence of two teachers on also observe the lesson transaction. With a feedback from the two observes, the lesson should be revised and finalized. The finalized lesson should also be rehearsed.
