The Ashtavakra Gita: Radical Advaita Vedanta View of Existential Truth

The Ashtavakra Gita is a key Sanskrit text in Advaita Vedanta, promoting radical non-dualism. It takes the form of a poetic dialogue between the deformed sage Ashtavakra and the philosopher-king Janaka of Mithila.
This sacred text encourages those seeking Moksha to move beyond duality-driven spiritual rituals and gradual practices. Instead, it urges seekers to cleanse their minds of all conditioning and to cultivate pure consciousness, completely detached from the material world.
Self-knowledge is Atmadvaita, a direct self-to-self realization of Absolute Oneness. Only the inner Self, Atman, is considered real. The universe, Brahmanda, is merely an illusion flowing through your awareness, similar to waves on an ocean. Liberation occurs in an instant through self-reflection and intuition, with no paths leading to it; all prescribed methods are false traps.
The Ashtavakra Gita asserts that liberation is not something to be achieved in the future. You are liberated the moment you let go of the false identity of being the "doer" or Karta. Practice the witness consciousness, Sakshi bhava. Understand that you are not your body, mind, thoughts, or social roles. You are the pure, unchanging witness observing everything.
Even the desire for liberation can be a form of bondage. The ultimate goal of life presents a unique paradox. The strong yearning for spiritual liberation can become a mental trap. True peace comes when you entirely relinquish all seeking and rest in absolute stillness.
Spiritual seekers are advised to purify and still their minds by observing their thoughts and feelings through meditation, aiming to reach a no-mind state as a pure witness to realize the Existential Truth in a liberating flash.
Message of Ashtavakra Gita: A Poem
You are not the body, you are not the mind,
Leave all the shadows of the world behind.
Beyond the senses, beyond all your names,
You are the witness to all of life’s games.
The "I" is a dream that the world has spun,
A mask for the light of the eternal sun.
When you stop holding, when you let go,
The rivers of truth will instantly flow.
You were born free, you are still free today,
Let all your cravings just vanish away.
Be just pure awreness, no goal to be won,
You're Witness Whole, and the journey is done.
