Buddha's Birthday, also known as Buddha Jayanti or Buddha Purnima, Buddhist festival that is celebrated in most of South, Southeast and East Asia, commemorating the birth of the prince Siddhartha Gautama, who became the Buddha and founded Buddhism. This year the festival falls on May 1.

By the followers, the festival is also called Vesak, that marks the three most significant events in Gautama Buddha's life—his birth, enlightenment (attaining Nirvana under the Bodhi tree, and Parinirvana or passing away— which all traditionally occurred on the same full moon day of the Vaisakha month. It is a holy day for reflection on peace, compassion, and the Middle Path.

On the occasion of Vesak which is also recognized by the UN. the UN Secretary-General António Guterres, stated, Guided by the Buddha’s example, let us summon our shared humanity and build the more peaceful and sustainable world all people need and deserve."

The Buddha’s message to humanity is a timeless call for inner peace, compassion, and wisdom. He taught that suffering arises from craving and ignorance, but can be overcome through ethical living, mindfulness, and the Noble Eightfold Path. By promoting non-violence, equality, and self-responsibility, he encouraged individuals to become their own light and cultivate kindness toward all beings.

A Gentle Middle Way Treaded Mindfully: The Buddha's Message

Dear ones, a quiet truth I bring,

A song of peace, on silent wing.

No fighting, anger, or a need,

Can plant a happy, loving seed.

Our worries grow from what we chase,

From not seeing with a clearer grace.

But kindness, thought, and living right,

Can lead us to a steady light.

Be kind to all, the small, the great,

And find your peace, and your real fate.

Be your own lamp, a burning gleam,

And share your kindness like a dream.

For Middle Path, so calm and true,

Purposeful life can bloom in you.
