World Wetlands Day 2026,, being observed on April 16l, explores the deep-rooted connections between wetlands and cultural practices, traditions and local knowledge systems

On the occasion of the observance, Dr Musonda Mumba, Secretary General of the Convention on Wetlands said that there is a dire need to protect and preserve our since they have the deep-rooted connections between wetlands and cultural practices, traditions and knowledge systems.

Dr Mohammed Ali Qurban, CEO of the National Center of Wildlife, Saudi Arabia stated that throughout history, wetlands have served as sources of water and food, spaces for cultural interaction, and a reposite to local knowledge

A Google AI prompt informs, "World Wetlands Day, celebrated annually on February 2nd, marks the 1971 adoption of the Ramsar Convention in Iran to promote global wetland conservation. These vital ecosystems—including marshes, swamps, and mangroves—cover only 6% of Earth’s land but provide critical biodiversity habitats, water purification, and carbon storage. Despite their importance, wetlands are disappearing three times faster than forests."

It adds, "World Wetlands Day 2026 aims to reverse this trend with the theme "Wetlands and traditional knowledge: Celebrating cultural heritage," highlighting the essential link between these ecosystems and community well-being. The day emphasizes that protecting wetlands is crucial for biodiversity and fighting climate."

I feel that schools must organize the event though experiential learning with a visit to nearby wetland with reads and teach them the geographical symbols and visual codes of wetland
