Title: Deepening awareness about climate change and sustainability via academic and aesthetic reuse of discarded plastic containers on a small hill school campus through designed STEAM project: Proposal note

“Looking at the plastic waste in the forms of bottles and containers at the Plenum School, which is contributing to pollution on the campus, it would be appropriate to launch a short term Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) based project involving teachers and students for academics and aesthetics gains along with creating awareness about climate change and reuse sustainability principle,” stated Umang Darnal, principal and art expert at the school during a discussion with his colleagues.

Consequently, a project team consisting of Umang (Art-craft expert), Lalit (Science-Math expert), (computer science teacher) and Sakshi (Language teacher) was formed in early April, 2022, for the project.

It was perceived that under the project, craft would be seen as low-level technology and engineering; decoration of products as artwork or aesthetics; while science, technology, maths learning would be related academics and issues of climate change and sustainability awareness aspects. The laboratory work and workshop practices in creating and using the waste products would be mobilized for academic and awareness enhancement of students.

For future reference, the proposal note was blogged at this site along with some pictures as visual data for writing the project report after two month.

Some work on using discarded water bottles for science experiments was done by Dr Lalit Kishore which was found worthy of incorporation in the the current project for reuse of discarded bottles in and around the Plenum School campus.
