Micro videos are short video clips of 6-20 second duration video-clips which can be used for classroom instruction, social media messages or call for action.
They are educative and used for knowledge transfer not for entertainment or fun.
They use a single instance of time (micro-moment) that reduces cognitive load on the viewer or learner by limiting to a single thought-image or idea with micro-content or minimum least information for easy or conscious processing by brain and retention.
Content reduction is for on-line transmission since it has been found that images and sounds hold in working memory for roughly twenty seconds.
Other examples of cognitive load reduction include the following:
It has been suggested that for micro-videos for classroom we must use visual symbols (instead of pictures) with some with voice-over. Research recommends that using visual symbols reduces processing time and eliminates instructor-learner bias.
Three elements of educational micro-videos: Attention caturing (Ready the leaner); Information (Instructional content with visual symbols); and Reflection (Review what was covered)
