UN-India expresses deep concern about recent gang rapes and murders of girls

UN-India has urged priority in addressing violence against women and girls based on recent gang rape and death while showing concern about increasing number such cases. According to them it was essential for the authorities to ensure that 'the perpetrators are brought to justice speedily.




"Cases of the alleged rape, murder in Hathras, Balrampur are another reminder that women, girls from disadvantaged social groups are at greater risk of gender-based violence," stated UN-India.


Some highlights of the statement are a follows.


-One in three rape victims is a child (In India). More than 7,200 children, including infants are raped every year.


-Given the stigma attached to rapes, especially when it comes to children, this most likely is only the tip of the ice berg.

-The steps being taken by the Government of India to strengthen safety measures for women and girls are welcome and urgent.


-Girls and women need to be valued, respected and feel safe, not only within the confines of their homes but also in public spaces
