UN urges 'Social Justice in the Digital Economy' which is fast becoming new normal

The UN proclaimed 'World Day of Social Justice' is observed each year on February 20 globally with a theme. This year the theme is "A Call for Social Justice in the Digital Economy" in view of the fact that digital business is becoming the new normal of the world of work.

According to the UN, since early 2020, 'the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic have led to remote working arrangements and allowed for the continuation of many business activities, further reinforcing the growth and impact of the digital economy.'

Furthermore, the implementation and adaptation to the new normal has thrown up 'serious challenges, including serious financial crises, insecurity, poverty, exclusion and inequality within and among societies, and considerable obstacles to further integration and full participation in the global economy for developing countries, as well as some countries with economies in transition.'

Here is the ABC poem on Social Justice in the Digital Economy as per the information indicated by UN website

  • A: Attending to digital gaps in the availability, affordability, access to the internet, and use of ICTs

  • B: Bridging the digital divide within the country and globally across various countries

  • C: Connecting the income-generating opportunities and benefits from flexible work arrangements to larger populace

  • D: Dialogue and coordination for fair and just regulatory certainty for universal labour standards

  • E: Enhancing funding for continuous adaptations to digital transformations or updating and ensuring availability of reliable digital infrastructure

The UN has urged the world community to attend to the issues of social development and social justice in the present situation which have become indispensable for the achievement and maintenance of peace and security within and among nations.

It is needed to be understood that social development and social justice cannot be attained in the absence of peace and security, or in the absence of respect for all human rights and fundamental freedoms.
