UN urges to reshape literacy teaching and learning in the COVID-19 crisis times and beyond

This year, amid the COVID-19 crisis, the International Literacy Day (September 8) is to be celebrated on the social media and with virtual events on the internet.

The theme of the observance this year is “Literacy teaching and learning in the COVID-19 crisis and beyond” with focus on the role of educators and changing pedagogies.

The theme highlights the following points

  • learning is a lifelong with focus on youth and adults education

  • making efforts to bridge existing gap between policy discourse and reality

  • leveraging online learning through social media, digital platform, TV and radio

  • making use of open air spaces with social distances

  • preparing educators and trainers in on-line education methods and material development

The UN has to find ways and means to create 'innovative and effective pedagogies and teaching methodologies can be used in youth and adult literacy programmes to face the pandemic and beyond' and 'formulate effective policies, systems, governance and measures that can support educators and learning.'
