World Heart Day: Scale up prevention of heart attack and stroke during present times of COVID crisis

World Heart Day (Sep 29) is being observed across the globe coordinated by the WHO through its Global Hearts Initiative with the theme "Scale up prevention of heart attack and stroke." And, it is required that we look after ourselves during the testing times of the COVID-19 crisis since the pandemic is taking toll of those in a big way who do not look after their heart's health.

According to WHO, Cardiovascular Diseases (CVDs) take the lives of 17.9 million people every year, 31% of all global deaths.

"Triggering these diseases – which manifest primarily as heart attacks and strokes – are tobacco use, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity and the harmful use of alcohol. These in turn show up in people as raised blood pressure, elevated blood glucose and overweight and obesity, risks detrimental to good heart health," warned the WHO.

WHO adds, "Launched in September 2016, the Global Hearts Initiative has since been rolled out in a number of countries. In those settings health workers are being trained to better deliver tested and affordable measures to protect people from CVDs and help them to recover following a heart attack or stroke."

On the occasion of the event, I reproduce my write-ups from 'scrachmysoul' blog and merinews, com (links are given below) adding that the present life style is being blamed for the increased incidents of heart attack among the youth.

Here is my message on the World Heart Day in haiku – the Japanese syllabic pattern poetry.

HAIKU

Smoke not, be active

To have hearty-healthy life.

Keep fit with less salt.

***

To have healthy heart,

Walk a lot, smoke not, less salt.

Be positive ‘n pep.

***

Be active-n-playful

To get to the heart of health.

Smoke not, have least salt.

***

Laugh a lot, smoke not.

Have balanced diet with less salt.

Live large heartedly.
