World Rivers Day is being celebrated today to highlights the importance of rivers in daily and part of nature’s cycle of water to keeping them unpolluted.

The observance is held every year on the fourth Sunday of September. This year, it fell on September 27. According to the organizers of the event, 'plants and animals surrounding the river and canyon would not thrive and be as beautiful as they are if our rivers were polluted.'

The observance is meant to increase public awareness and encourages the improved stewardship of rivers around the world since they are the sources of 'supply of water for drinking, growing crops, manufacturing, energy, and transport.'

SHORT POEM ON RIVER

Runs down the river

From hills to the sea

Passing through the brooks

Gushing around the trees
