Ancient Temple of Literature in Hanoi is worth visiting

Updated: Jul 10, 2021

The Temple of Literature, Hanoi, Vietnam, - which I visited in 2017 - was built in 1070 and has been preserved in its ancient architectural style despite some restoration work in the twentieth and twenty first centuries.

The statues of Confucius and his four best disciples;and the carvings of scholars and painted scholars are major attraction

In 1076, Vietnam's first university / Imperial Academy, was established within the temple but later lost its prominence and shifted out.

The main gate to the temple, Van lake, Giam park and the interior courtyards which are surrounded by a brick wall are worth a look.

The first two courtyards still have ancient trees and trimmed lawns for relaxing which are maintained well for the visitors

The bell located above the main gate was added in the 19th century. The bell was made out of Bronze and could only be touched by monks.

The bell has an outline of a phoenix, and a dragon, which represent which represents beauty and power respectively.

Here are three one-liner quotes of Confucius.

  • Never do to others what you would not like them to do to you.

  • Before you embark on a journey of revenge, dig two graves.

  • Wheresoever you go, go with all your heart.
