Are democracy and rule of law being undermined in US through racial disunity and violent protests!

The year ending of 2020 and beginning of 2021, in the US, have seen violence in the major democracy of the world and champion of democratic processes.

Many feel that the violence has been patronized by political leaders that has led to loss of social cohesion, civility and democratic values.

The UN has urged the Americans and their leaders not to resort to violent protests and the administration not to use excessive police force and show restraint. The appeal has been made to keep protests peaceful and upkeep the democratic values.

The recent violent pro-Trump protests in the US Capitol on January 6 have shaken the civil society across the globe, The UN and human rights groups have urged restrain and called for keeping the protests peaceful in the US.

Earlier, the UN and international human rights groups had praised the peaceful protest of farmers in India. It was so because no political interference was allowed and political gimmicks were foiled through solid social cohesion within the protests.

I wrote the following limerick of sorts as a reflection on the US protests.

LIMERICK

Rioting Trump Andh-Bhakts storm the US Capitol

In the way akin to furious pack of wild animals

UN appeals respect for democracy and law

Urges rioters to withdraw and create thaw

Hope Indian leaders learn lessons and be sensible
