Assam celebrates Bhogali Bihu to revere divine fertility principle

In various parts of the Country, the festivals of Lohri or Maghi, Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Bhogali Bihu, Lal Loi, Uttarayan and Paush Parva are being observed.


On the occasion of these festivals, President Ram Nath Kovind tweeted, "Greetings and best wishes to fellow citizens on the occasion of Lohri, Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Bhogali Bihu, Uttarayan and Paush parva. May these festivals strengthen the bond of love, affection and harmony in our society and increase prosperity and happiness in the country.


In Assam, Bihu festival celebrates the bounty of harvest as well as the fertility of Mother Earth and women that is linked with life support and nurturance. Thus, Magh Bihu or Bhogali Bihu is a celebration of bountiful nature and abundance along with reverence for fertility principle life continuity.


During Magh Bihu, Assamese enjoy the community feast of 'bhog kora' to strengthen a sense of identity and belonging with mother earth.


Both at the family and community levels, a number of sweets, snacks, rice delicacies and savories are prepared and joyously shared.and relished.


In the tribal areas of the North-East India, the worship practices related to nature's spirits, fertility, local tutelary gods and shamanism are common.
