Bird Day being observed to raise awareness about conversation and protection of birds

Bird Day is observed on January 5 each year to raise concern for the protection and conservation of bird species. It is said that there are serious threats of extinction of quite a few bird species mainly due to human activities leading to habitat destruction, pet trade and non-veg food habits. In many countries an exercise of bird count is undertaken on this day.

It is needed to be understood that birds help maintain sustainable eco-system by balancing food chain due to the following reasons.

  • Maintaining population levels of prey and predator species of birds

  • Providing food for scavengers and decomposers after death

  • Helping in plant reproduction as pollinators or seed dispersers

I many states of in India swine flu in birds have been reported currently leading to death of crows and other birds. In various districts of Rajasthan bird flu is taking tolls of birds in scores.

Today, we must take a few moments to go around to spot birds and appreciate their beauty and the diversity among them.
