Book: Children, Health and Science: Child-to-Child Activities and Science and Technology Teaching

Edited by Hugh Hawes, Jhon Nicholson and Grazyna Bonati Children, the book "Health and Science: Child-to-Child Activities and Science and Technology Teaching" is a resource book, in the form of activities to be carried by science teachers and educators, holds that science involves developing ways of thinking and reasoning and looking at the world clearly along with applying the acquired learning to solve problems that matter in our lives.

According to book published by UNESCO, Paris, in 1991, both teachers and caregivers have to assume the role of health educators along with the doctors, nurses and therapists. The book produced to improve science and technology education dwells on the ways health education in institutions can contribute to scientific thinking or scientific literacy and skills of life.

The book, spread over 121 pages, provides activities to trasnsacted through the child-to-child approach that started in University of London which emphasis the premise that the most important way for remaining healthy is to prevent illness from taking place. It have been suggested that a child-to-child school must set up a monitoring and review committee for panning and carrying out resource book activities. The activities described in the book are in a sequence of knowing to doing to thinking to feeling or empathizing.

The major section of the resource book is in the form of activity sheets to done by teachers and other health educators to be supported by the committee set up for the purpose, The activities have illustrated by children-friendly line drawing with draw attention. One of the activities is to keep the classroom clean and maintain the school garden. Also, there are activities for safe and clean drinking water. Personal hygiene and looking after teeth, eyes, clothes, etc. are part of curricular activities.

I find that book is equally useful for teachers, educators, caregivers and occupational therapists since it is in the form of a resource book. Above all, the evaluation of the programme along with that of children has been suggested for keep it dynamic. I the present of COVID pandemic, for children with special needs, the activities suggested in the book can be extremely useful for development of children. Further, special schools that run mother-child training programmes, the activities can be extremely useful to make such training relevant.
