CASTME Annual General Meeting reports three Commonwealth Awardees for 2020


The Commonwealth Association of Science, Mathematics and Technology Educators (CASTME) instituted ‘The Findel CASTME Awards’ (Report: June 2021) communicated on June 9 by Kathleen Nugent ( CASTME Vice Chair Awards, kath.nugent@yahoo.co.u) the awardees were announced at the 2021 ASE Annual Conference by Sir John Holman, President of the Association for Science Education.


The report lists the three awardees, Sarath Premawardana, Ibiyinka Ogunlade and Lalit Kishore, as follows


1. The Findel CASTME Education Award

Entry: Science Laboratory and Science Museum Submitted by: Sarath Premawardana

Awarded to: Science Laboratory and Science Museum Panadura-Sri Lanka


The project, submitted by Sarath Premawardana, uses discarded materials to develop equipment which explains scientific principals and promotes practical activities.


On receiving the award, Sarath commented: “I am very happy and delighted to receive the award. It is a great prestige and encouragement for me to continue improving. It will help many more students and teachers in future to broaden their knowledge and skills.”


2. The Findel CASTME Award / 1

Entry: Popularising Science and Technology among Children for self-reliance. Submitted by: Director- Professor IbiyinkaOgunlade

Awarded to: CHILDREN-IN-SCIENC E& TECHNOLOGY (CIST) Ekita State University, Ado-Ekiti, Nigeria


CIST is based in Nigeria and is aimed at children aged 5 to 12 years old. A major focus of their work is running activities and talks with Parents Teachers Associations (PTAs), school assemblies and community halls across Ekiti State. They also run out of school activities which involve frequent visits and excursions to small scale and cottage industries to show real world examples of STEM in action.


On receiving news of the award, Professor Ibiyinka Ogunlade commented: “We are particularly encouraged by the news of the Findel CASTME Community Award. We pledge to continue our efforts and add more zeal in making our children and society at large, scientifically and technologically literate.”


3. The Findel CASTME Award / 2

Entry: Making Middle School Science to Spin, Swirl and Sway for Self-Development of Science Educator as Action Researcher and Learner-Teacher. Submitted by: Dr Lalit Kishore Awarded to: Disha Foundation, Nirman Nagar, Jaipur, India


The DISHA Foundation, a centre for special education, was created to provide an opportunity to children with physical and intellectual challenges to help them discover their potential. In particular, their project submission shows that at middle school level, a lot of hands-on science can be done with readily available materials to give a first hand feel of science processes.


On receiving the award, Dr Lalit Kishore commented: “We are delighted to know the recognition of our work by CASTME. The award will inspire us to innovate and individualise science and math instruction”


Announcement made for receiving the entries for three FINDEL CASTME Awards -2021 for which the submission deadline is october goes as follows.


1) The Findel CASTME Education Award Presented to the entry that displays an innovative approach to increasing STEM awareness. The awardee will receive a £300 voucher to spend on Philip Harris science equipment or resources as well as an international membership of the ASE for one year


2) The Findel CASTME Protect Our Planet Award Presented to a STEM project which focuses on the Sustainable Development Goals such as Climate Change, Responsible Consumption and Clean Water. The awardee will receive a £100 voucher from Findel International.


3) The Findel CASTME Community Award Presented to a community project focused on mothers, fathers, carers and children and/or on raising awareness of STEM in the community. The awardee will receive a £50 voucher from Findel International


I would like to mention that Dr Lalit Kishore had received his First CASTME Award-1982 while working at Motilal Nehru School of Sports, Rai (Haryana) and second award while working at Kendriya Vidyalaya-2, NFL, Bathinda. In all, he has won the award 16 times.
