The caterpillars in the inset video were found eating plants in our garden and I took a few shots and made a short video to show their ripple movement and tell their story.
Some salient facts about caterpillars
Caterpillars are the soft-bodied larval stage of insects like like butterflies and moths.
Caterpillars of most species are herbivorous or folivorous. They cause damage by eating leaves.
Caterpillars of moths are voracious feeders and considered agricultural and garden pests. At times they are called "eating machines."
They shed their skin a few times as their bodies grow till they enter a pupal stage
Some caterpillars are predatory and may feed on eggs of other insects, aphids, scale insects, or ant larvae. Some caterpillars are nocturnal.
Caterpillars have 3 or 5 pairs of true legs - segmented with joints like human knees and ankles - which are attached under the thorax and have a little claw on the end.
