Today, December 17, is International Pensioners Day to create awareness about pensioners' care, well being and benefits with the motto that the 'pensioners are an asset and in no way a burden.' Any kind of insensitivity towards pensioners and misappropriation of pension funds is deemed as a very serious matter world over.
As Lee Hsien Loong has rightly said, "Everybody has his place; everybody is equal. Treated equally, equal standing, equal rights and status." It is needed to seen by the employers that the pension fund, in fact, is a retirement plan wherein the sum of money collected for the retirees during their employment years is paid back in the form of periodic timely release of payments after his/her retirement, as is held in the academic and rule books.
"Pension is neither a bounty, nor a matter of grace depending on the sweet will of the employer, nor an ex-gratia payment. It is a payment for the past services rendered. It is a social welfare measure rendering socio-economic justice to those who in the heyday of their life ceaselessly toiled for the employer on an assurance that in their old age they would not be left in the lurch," the then CJI Y.V. Chandrachud, then chief justice of India in 1982, had said while delivering the judgement in pension related case of Nakara.
All India Postal & RMS Pensioners Association is organizin a webinar in the afternoon today with the theme 'Defend Pension and Defend Social Security' to the case of Nakara and the the landmark judgement on December 17, 1982, related to his litigation as well as other pension related topics (see inset pic.).
