The National Library Day is observed in India on August 12th to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan, the father of Indian library and information science.
Dr. Ranganathan is renowned for his contributions to the field, including the five laws of library science. The observance is regarded as an occasion to appreciate the vital role libraries and librarians can play in society, functioning as a resources of learning, providing access to relevant information and fostering a love of reading in general.
In tune with the NEP-2020, and The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) decided to introduce open-book assessments for Class 9 final exams from the 2026-27 academic session with an aim to shift from rote memorisation to application-based active learning through higher order thinking skills which makes the revitalization of the school libraries urgent as learning resources by promoting 'read to learn skills,' 'self-study skills' and notes making skills'
It is being said that unlike traditional exams, open-book tests involve students having access to textbooks and other relevant resources to answer questions which are conceptual and analytical questions requiring students to read, analyse, interpret, and apply the concept. Internet linked libraries can be helpful in making notes using the AI enhanced tools for information search for which it is necessary for teachers and students to learn to learn the 'AI prompt language.'
Furthermore such exams aim at testing the higher-order thinking skills of students which require to students and teachers have to frame different types questions if the text is the answer to those questions.
"Open book exams allow students to use textbooks and other resources during assessments, shifting the focus from memorization to understanding and application of knowledge. Libraries play a crucial role in open book exams by providing a wealth of resources that students can utilize for research and reference. The combination of open book exams and libraries promotes deeper learning and critical thinking skills," informs a Google AI overview adding that these exams are designed to assess a student's ability to understand, interpret, and apply concepts rather than simply recall facts. Students are permitted to refer to textbooks, notes, and other materials during the assessment,' informs a Google AI Overview on the topic.
Some ithe other points made by the AI overviews are as follows
Libraries and Open Book Exams: Libraries, with their extensive collections, become vital resources for students preparing for and taking open book exams. Students can leverage library resources to find information, research topics, and support their answers.
Reduced Pressure: Open book exams alleviate the pressure of rote memorization, allowing students to focus on applying their knowledge.
Deeper Understanding: By encouraging students to analyze and synthesize information, open book exams promote a more profound understanding of the subject matter, according to iScalePro.
Enhanced Learning: The ability to refer to resources and apply knowledge in different contexts can lead to better knowledge retention and a more flexible approach to learning.
However, the open book examinations require careful design to ensure they effectively assess higher-order thinking skills. Questions should encourage students to connect concepts, analyze information, and apply their knowledge to solve problems, concludes the overview
