Ahead of UN proclaimed Buddhist Vesak Day (May 12, 2025), UN Secretary-General António Guterres in his message stated, "The Buddha's teachings of compassion, tolerance and selfless service resonate deeply with the values of the United Nations. In an era of profound global challenges, these timeless principles must guide our shared path forward."
According to the UN website, the observance is 'the most sacred day to millions of Buddhists around the world since two and a half millennia ago', it was in 'the year 623 B.C., that the Buddha was born as well as attained enlightenment, and it was on the Day of Vesak that the Buddha in his eightieth year passed away.' "The teachings of the Buddha, and his message of compassion and peace and goodwill have moved millions," states the website.
Great Compassion Dharaṇi Mantra is central to the Buddhism which does not believe in existence of Soul and Supersoul or God. Humans have the gift of mind that can be imbued with 'compassion' for all sentient beings and is capable of manifesting enlightenment and liberation.
