COVID-19 literacy (Part 2): Know phrasal glossary of terms

A basic literacy about a topic is about knowing and understanding the basic vocabulary for meaningful listening and reading about the topic. It consists of basic phonics, word-identification and decoding or meaning making out of most basic terms related to a topic.

Here is the second part of the vocabulary about COVID-19 disease that caused lockdown leading to staying at home and working or learning from home.

In this part, the vocabulary consists of two and three-word phrases.

Read the following phrasal terms to get further literate about COVID-19.

Case fatality rate (CFR): Estimated risk of mortality from COVID-19 disease which is the ratio of the number of deaths caused and number of cases of the disease in a given time period at a place .

Close contact: The disease risk factor to a known case within 6 feet of a person infected with the virus for a prolonged period of time, or direct contact with the infected person’s secretions.

Community spread: Infections in a given geographic area without any out- travel or connection to a known case.

Contact tracing: The process of identifying, assessing, and managing people exposed to disease to prevent onward spead.

Cordon sanitaire : Ban on leaving a defined geographic area, such as a community, region, or country infected by a disease to halt further spread of disease.

Drive through testing: Individual remains sitting in his or her vehicle, and medical or support staff in protective gear out-reach to administer the swab test.

Droplet spread: A mode of disease spread that involves less than 2m range of respiratory droplets produced by sneezing, coughing, or talking without mask.

Flattening the curve: Slow down of spread of disease to number of cases to get handles by existing hospitals and infrastructure without any make-shift arrangements

Home isolation: Person with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 directed to stay at home till recovery

SARS-CoV-2: It is name name given to novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19 disease.

Shelter in place: Remaining at residence, except to conduct essential activities, essential businesses, and essential government functions.

Social distancing: Precautions and measures taken to minimise person-to-person contact in a given community to slow down the spread of disease such as working from home, closing offices and schools, cancelling events, and avoiding public transportation.

Viral shedding: It is the period of time or window period after the virus has replicated in the host and is being emitted through contact, cough, cold or speaking for likely spread.
