December solstice marks beginning of winter in northern hemisphere

Winter/Hibernal/December Solstice occurs when the Earth's axis is tilted at an angle of 23.5 degrees or either of Earth's poles reaches its maximum tilt away from the Sun on December 21-22 to make the longest night on December 22. A number of festivals take place during December month attributed to winter solstice

However, this situation happens twice in a year, on December 21-22 and June 20-21, once in each hemisphere as earth moves around the Sun. This tilt leads the Sun to move from northern to the southern hemisphere and vice versa bringing in seasonal changes marked by winter and summer solstice.

Internet search engine giant had marked the winter solstice in 2019 solstice in Northern Hemisphere with a doodle on its home page on December 22. The doodle showed a snow man sitting on the earth with snowing in the background and the second ‘O’ of the logo replaced by head the snow man.

It has been officially announced that the winter solstice occurred at 11:19 pm EST on December 22 when the sun would be directly over the latitude of the Tropic of Capricorn.

Both the summer and winter solstices and seasonal changes are caused by the tilt of Earth's axis.
