Defining force with visual and text literacy: A research lesson for grade eight students

A research lesson for grade eight students for the concept of ‘force’ was developed by Dr Lalit Kishore and Sakshi Rathi, physics and English teachers at Plenum School in Himachal Pradesh for team teaching to link common communicative language and technical language of science. The objective of preparing the research lesson was to forge an interdisciplinary link through focus group discussion and reflection. The procedure of listing out the mini learning episodes to be divided and rehearsed by the two-teacher team was finalized.


The micro-planned mini-episodes were as follows: the Common name of force: Push or pull; Visual symbols of pull and push; Conceptualizing force; Two effects of force; Understanding force in terms of its two effects; Understanding force in terms of its two effects; Visual symbolic representation of force; Formal definition of force; Vocabulary building; Pattern poem on force: Pyramid poem; Graphic depicted pyramid poem. The ten episodes were supported by power point presentation which was reflected upon, critiqued and finalized. A forty-minute rehearsal was done by the the two-teacher to get well-versed with its transaction.
