Designing a self-study based topic readiness sheet for senior students

Updated: Dec 12, 2021

Research suggests that since at the senior school level, curricula are disciplinary linked with higher education, therefore, assignment based self-study skills are a must for students to get exposed to.

My experience in training students in self-study skills informs that a beginning with a self-study based readiness sheet linked to the ‘read to learn skills’ and suggests that the beginning should be made with following two study skills, namely information i skimming and ii scanning skills.

Skimming skill pertains to flipping over the pages for key words and terminology of the discipline and their listing. For science subjects it will involve identifying the symbols and abbreviation being used.

While scanning involves fast reading the pages to identify the specific and precise descriptions in phrasal form related to terminology with some pertinent remarks.

At Plenum School, Himachal Pradesh, an experiment was conduct in topic readiness on the the topic of ‘waves’ at ‘secondary school level’ in which three students participated. In order to systematize the readiness skills, the skimmed and scanned information was divided in two parts, namely, verbal and visual literacy skills.
