Discover the Spiritual Depth of Mandala Drawing: Surrounding Sacred silhouette with Mandalas

A silhouette (sɪluˈɛt) image is a dark representation of a subject set against a brigher background, where only the outline of the subject is visible, highlighting its profile without any details. In addition to being a photographic method for producing dramatic and artistic images, silhouettes can also be made in other forms like drawing, painting, or digital art.
However, an image of a silhouette of a deity or its motifs can be surrounded by a mandala drawing to add a spiritual aspect. According to Tharad (2025), creating a silhouette image of a deity surrounded by a beautifully detailed mandala brings about inner calm and balance, with each line reflecting a sense of inner peace and mindfulness. "It's the kind of artwork that makes you slow down and breathe a little deeper," he explains, using the example of the Buddha silhouette image encircled by a mandala. (see inset pic)
A mandala (Sanskrit for circle) is an artistic depiction of higher thought and deeper meaning, represented as a geometric symbol used in spiritual, emotional, or psychological work to help focus one's attention. The term and the image first appeared in India in the Rig Veda, which is believed to be its origin. In Hindu and Buddhist cultures especially, mandalas and thangkas symbolize the universe and serve as a guide on the path to enlightenment. We’ve since observed the geometric design in yoga studios, dream catchers, healing circles, and other meditative practices. The practice of creating and collecting mandalas is a transformative activity aimed at restoring inner peace and wisdom within (Mark, 2020).
