Emerging role of mathematics instruction in STEM education in digitally driven 21st century society: Special on National Mathematics Day, December 22

A dual coded short note on STEM Education

With the issues like climate change crisis, depletion of conventional energy resources, excessive consumerism; digital technology driven social isolation, etc., the idea of 'Education for Sustainable Development,' is being promoted by the UN under its Sustainable Development Goals( SDGs) agenda-2030. Both, the SDG-4 goal dedicated to equitable and inclusive quality education for all and so the India's National Education Policy (NEP-2020) through a blending of general education and employable skills-education as well as the STEM-integrated education. Thus, mathematics plays a crucial role in STEM education, and there are multiple ways to it

It being held that mathematics education is the basic building block for all STEM disciplines with digital technology becoming a part day to-day life of people. Applied mathematics and data science view that language of mathematics and digital literacy are needed to be used to communicate across all STEM subjects.

Special STEM related mathematical-analytical skilling modules are required at school level for enabling schools to apply mathematical concepts to emergent real-world in a technology driven world.

In near future, applications in science, technology, and engineering are going to be based on mathematical models and critical thinking to meet the global challenges and take contextual relevant decisions help students become responsible global citizens who can ethically take care for the planet and its resources.

Thus, the role of mathematics is crucial in STEM education by making it a communication and decision making tool through enhanced critical thinking, mastery of language of mathematics, mathematical modelling skills and data analysis skills
