A Short Note on World Book Day
The UN-established 'World Book Day' (WBD) is organized and celebrated every year on April 23 by UNESCO. This global event, WBD, aims to promote reading, publishing, and awareness of copyright, while also encouraging a love for literature and literacy around the world.
The purpose of this observance is to honor the influence of books as a connection between different generations and cultures, promoting reading for enjoyment.
April 23 is also the anniversary of the birth or death of famous authors like Shakespeare and Cervantes, along with other notable writers such as Inca Garcilaso de la Vega and Vladimir Nabokov.
In several countries, including many others, education departments, school management committees, and social organizations provide children with book vouchers to buy their own books. Additionally, school libraries and institutions organize readings at book clubs, author meet-and-greets, and book-sharing events.
This observance also aligns with Saint George's Day in Spain, where it is customary to give books and roses to family members, friends, and children.
To make the observance a eventful learning, a mini-book creation activity was undertaken with writing and reciting couplets on a book followed by vocabulary building activities at CCE, Jaipur (see inset collage).
Couplets on Book for Kids
A book is a friend,
A reading joy without end.
Pages you can turn,
So many things to learn.
Stories big and small,
Fun for one and all.
Pictures bright and bold,
Tales waiting to be told.
You can take it near,
Or read it right here.
A book is a treasure,
Filled with so much pleasure.
