Updated: Feb 19, 2023

Photographing water surface, which in motion of various kinds, can be fascinating subject for photography. It requires proper camera setting and motion on water surface to convey something.

Moving water in natural water bodies is one area of photography. Another one is creating water motion in a container and photographing it.

However, whatever be the source of water, look for the interesting point in it or an element of composition in the foreground or background.

For capturing motion choose the right shutter speed. Often, for moving water surface, a fast shutter speed that freezes water motion works well if enough natural light is available. Use shutter speeds of 1/500th and above for good shots. If light is low, adjusting ISO is required can come in handy.

Experiment with silken effect, of water in motion by slowing down your shutter speed to an exposure between 0.5 and 1.0 by a still camera on a tripod with shutter release cable or timer.

Golden hours are great times for long exposures. At other times of day, when sun is bright, you may use a neutral density filter.

The inset pictures were taken by churning water in scattered light with high shutter speed and timer shutter release. Ripples on bath tub can be another good subject. Interference of water ripples from two or more ripple sources causing interference pattern also gives fascinating pictures.
