It is held that hand copying a scripture or writing in moderate calligraphic style your own spiritual verses is a method 'meditating in the scriptures' and improves your spiritual intelligence (see handwritten Sanskrit verses in the inset collage)
In his blog [1] , Michael Christian describes seven benefits of hand copying a scriptures or selected portions of it, such as brain development, humility, sacrifice, attentiveness; love of the supreme spirit, healing through holy words and spiritual growth, as I gather. However, for details, one can visit the site.
This practice is also prescribed for spiritual therapy to religious minded people who feel worried and depressed. The clients are asked to learn calligraphy and daily do the copying a selected scripture for a few hours (1-4 hours).
Here, in the inset picture, the father of one of my colleges, Vibhanshu Gaur, at a Jaipur-based organization, had been doing so and writing Sanskrit verses and lived his old age mentally active and peacefully. He did by evoking the Supreme Soul through a prayer with a supplication to bless with wisdom and revelation before producing his daily hand copy of verses as a meditative practice.
