Happy Father's Day 2020: Noble fathers have noble children, says Euripedes

Each year, Father's Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June to honour contribution that fathers make to their children's lives and society. This year the observance falls on June 21.

The first Father's Day is believed to have been observed in West Virginia, US, in 1907. The day was commercialized in 1930s with greeting cards and florist industries taking over the family celebration.

Now, Father's Day is an important day across the world that recognizes and celebrates fatherhood and commends the important mentoring role fathers and father figures play to bring up their children and build their lives.

Father's Day is a holiday with range of activities and traditions like exchange of greetings cards, gifts and parties.

Here's an ABC verse on Father's Day.

A: Advocated first in US as a holiday by Sonora Smart Dodd, whose father raised six children all by himself after the death of their mother, as a gratitude his contribution as an ideal father.

B: Belongs to fathers and father-figures of an extended family like step-fathers, fathers-in-law, grandfathers and great-grandfathers and other elderly male relatives.

C: Celebrates the contribution that fathers and father figures make to their children's life and society.

D: Day's observance involves extending greetings, good wishes and expressing gratitude

E: Exchange of gifts and holidaying on the occasion of Father's Day have become common

Many think, the observance is meant for fathers to reflect on the style of fatherhood and improve themselves as Jack Baker puts it, “Every dad, if he takes time out of his busy life to reflect upon his fatherhood, can learn ways to become an even better dad.”
