Most observances and special days have becomes events managed by markets. These days you need not find out when is Mother's Day falling. On the media and internet the events was announced well in advance that it would be celebrated on May 9 in 2021. Market forces had got active right from the beginning of the month of May with gift ads, notifications about market place events etc.
Here I reproduce my write-up from merinews portal
Ads appear about special treats in restaurants, entries for mothers' talent hunt shows, fancy dress shows in schools in which kids dress up like mothers and mock them, and many more notifications of similar kind. The gift shops, sell sappy Hallmark cards, florists' shops put ads for on-line purchase and delivery of items to honour mothers.
In 1920, disgusted by outright commercialisation of Mother's Day, its founder Anna Jarvis celebrated the day to honour her own mother, who had been an exemplary mother and worked as a Sunday school teacher and caregiver for wounded soldiers during the Civil War, and also advocated for the abolition of the official observance in the United States.
Jarvis, who had founded Mother's Day in 1908, later, started urging people to stop buying flowers and cards for their mothers by denouncing its commercialisation that undermined the noble observance with greed. She even made appeals and petitions for the rest of her life trying to abolish the observance she founded to pay her gratitude to mothers. Likewise, many well meaning mothers also feel that the observance developed into a commercialised and stupid observance overwrought with distorted expectations and materialism.
Here is my acrostic on MOTHER as a tribute.
