Proclaimed by the UN, the International Women's Day (IWD) coordinated by UN Women, is observed each year on March 8 'to commemorate the cultural, political, and socioeconomic achievements of women.' The focus is often on women’s empowerment, women's rights movement, gender equality, reproductive rights, and exploitation of women, violence and abuse against women.
Each year IWD is given a theme; in 2022, the theme is 'Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow'.
However, IWD has turned into a tokenism, rituals and event organisation. We need to work on women’s empowerment seriously to bring about a social and attitudinal change for gender equity.
Here are the ABCs of women empowerment.
A: Addressing women’s development in psychological, community networking, organizational, economic, social and cultural spheres
B: Batting for women's rights and gender equity through advocacy, awareness drives, collaboration with other groups
C: Consists of enhancing their self-concept, self-worth, self-efficacy, decision making skill, self-change and social change competencies
D: Developing life skills in educating, training and facilitating professional growth for women
E: Ensuring health, well-being, security and safety of female functionaries and populace
