Invest in safety of health workers as priority for patient safety during COVID-19 pandemic : WHO

The second World Patient Safety Day got observed on social media and with virtual events on 17 September 'to create awareness of patient safety and urge people to show their commitment to making healthcare safer' amid the novel coronavirus caused pandemic.


According to WHO, the COVID-19 pandemic has unveiled the huge challenges health workers are facing globally and the health workers encounter increased risk of healthcare associated infections, violence, accidents, stigma, illness and death.


Since health workers were working in stressful environments during the pandeic, it enhanced risks to the physical and mental health and safety of health workers making them more prone to errors which might lead to patients' harm.


"A Priority for Patient Safety has, therefore, been selected as the theme for World Patient Safety Day 2020, which focuses on the interrelationship between health worker safety and patient safety, depicted in the slogan ‘Safe health workers, Safe patients’. This emphasizes the need for a safe working environment for health workers as a prerequisite for ensuring patient safety," added WHO
