'Jaipur-based Disha Foundation to bridge research gap in special education through mixed methods'

Dr Lalit Kishore, who is working with Disha Foundation in Jaipur as research fellow since 2016 on renewable contract basis to head the R&D unit, reported the genesis of research work at the organisation to Meri News [1], which is reproduced since portal has been discontinued.

"Disha Foundation, a civil society organization in Jaipur, has decided to take up research studies in the area of special education to move further to accomplish its mission of 'a society with equal opportunities for all'.

At a meeting of the organization held on July 13 attended by the management and functionaries of the institute, it was decided to bridge research gap in special education through mixed methods and to convert the institute into a special education laboratory and instructors to don the role of teacher-researchers under the mentorship of a research expert.

It was also decided that data collected at the various therapy units of the institute should be analyzed and research studies be undertaken with the existing data to begin with. Since the intervention of aquatic therapy had made a mark in 2015, it was decided to prepare a summary report of research since thesis are big and trends have changed now not to include overview of the whole research done by others.

Also, it was suggested that efforts should be made to get papers written and sent for the conferences so as to make work done at the institute as a part of the larger body of knowledge.

It was proposed to make use of the methods like action research, case studies, capturing good practices, intervention research, experimentation, procedure standardisation, outcome studies, secondary analysis studies, one-page documents, curriculum development studies, lesson studies etc., since each special child is unique.

A three-member team was formed to begin the writing of the research report with the help of existing data, an intervention so that research work gets initiated." (Author:Dr. Lalit Kishore; Date 14 July, 2016; Categories: Lifestyle,Education)

The first evaluated study by the R&D Unit was reported in the annual report of Disha (2015-16) which is available at the internet [2].
