Know ABCs of digital education to make a conscious and valid shift to new mode of teaching

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted frequent lockdowns and closure of educational institutions across the world with the slogan 'stay home, stay safe'. It has suddenly forced institutions to go for digital education without any capacity building and readiness of educational institutions.


With this sudden shift away from the face-to-face instruction in many parts of the globe, poor quality of on-line education by digitally-illiterate teachers, institutional heads and educational administrators is causing concern regarding the physical and mental health of young children.


Here is a definition of digital education and its ABCs to get well versed with to make a shift towards a valid digital education. These two aspects provide a framework for making a beginning for digital education by the institution and its functionaries.


Digital education is consciously planned and systematically managed use of 'digital tools and technologies' in teaching-learning process. At times, it is also called Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL), e-Learning, on-line learning or virtual classroom.


A: Affording learning opportunities and assessment schedules with digital technologies which are flexibly used with clear vision and deliberated strategies

B: Better is blended or multi-modal learning which use multiple methods of instruction with one-third time for digital learning

C: Capacity building of teachers in use of smart-boards, digital white-boards and camera friendly interactive skills

D: Designing appropriately engaging e-learning opportunities and experiences in disciplinary courses

E: Expertise and professionalism in digital education by all educational functionaries including those who are in administration for proper monitoring
