Know Discalculia: Snippet book review, reference and ABC poem

The book “Primary School Teachers Skills to Help Dyscalculic Children” is book based on a research study authored by N. Jaya and T. Geeta (2009) and published by Kalpaz Publication, New Delhi. The book is good for action researchers and those special educators keen to prepare individualised learning curriculum for children diagnosed with learning disability of dyscalculia.

In the book, the work of this blogger has been cited as “Kishore, L. (1984). Individual Guidance: An Aid to Learning, Educational Review, XV(1):1” as shown in the inset picture.

Here is ABC poem on the basis of my work at Disha: A Centre for Multiple Disabilities in Jaipur on pre-number concepts through multi-modal learning material including board games, card games, visuals and music for children with mild and moderate dyscalculia. The stress was on developing literacy and language skills in math first before taking up numeracy skills.

ABC poem

A; Acalculia is the profound disability to use math symbols and computation

B: Basic mathematical reasoning deficit and non-valuation of cluster of objects as groups or sets with members

C: Cardinal and ordinal systems of numbers are a comprehension challenge due neurological problems

D: Disability of counting and quantitative thinking

E: Educational achievement deficit in math as compared to children of same age group in general

For such children, the language development should be done first before introducing counting and math operations
