A short note on Laslakshan Parva
Laslakshan Parva or Paryushan Parva-2025 began on 21st August for Shwetambar Jains. For other sects of the religion, the dates are slightly different but the spirit of celebration is the same.
Laslakshan Parva, also known as the Paryushan festival, is a ten-day celebration in Jainism dedicated to the practice of the ten virtues of the soul: forgiveness, humility, straightforwardness, contentment, truth, sensual restraint, austerity, non-possession, celibacy, and non-attachment. This festival serves to strengthen these fundamental ethical principles and values inherent in Jainism.
The primary aim of the festival is to achieve spiritual purification, engage in self-reflection, and make progress towards moksha (liberation). This involves activities such as fasting, meditation, and the act of seeking forgiveness on the concluding day, known as Kshamavani, which is specifically dedicated to the pursuit of forgiveness.
The festival is characterized by fasting and penances aimed at cleansing both the body and mind. There is a daily commitment to self-reflection, which encourages individuals to confront their inner evils and aspire for spiritual advancement. Additionally, there is an emphasis on the study of Jain scriptures and participation in discourses. The festival underscores that the ultimate objective is spiritual liberation, or moksha. It is a period designated for profound introspection and the purification of the soul from karmic impurities. Reinforcing Values: This festival plays a crucial role in upholding the core ethical principles and values of Jainism.
Poem on Jain Daslakshan
Ten days to cleanse the heart and soul,
With virtues bright, to make us whole.
Forgiveness blooms, humility grows,
As inner peace serenely flows.
Straightforward paths we strive to tread,
Contentment fills where worries fled.
Truth shines forth, a guiding light,
Sensual chains release their might.
Austerity's strength, a mindful deed,
Non-possession plants a holy seed.
Celibacy's grace, a spirit pure,
Non-attachment helps us to endure.
Fasting, reflection, study deep,
Karmic bonds loosen, secrets sleep.
Moksha's call, a distant shore,
Kshamavani seeks peace evermore.
