LEARNING TO PRONOUNCE THE H-SOUND IN INTERNATIONAL PHONETICS ALPHABET SYSTEM

PHONICS AWARENESS



The English proximal consonant sound /h/ has the following attribute


  • It is voiceless fricative / hissing sound. A voiceless sound just makes use of air to make the sound.

  • Its speech organ is glottal / throat

  • In speaking /h/, the tongue does not touch any part of the mouth


In other words, /h/ is slightly voiced with a short burst of air from the mouth and is blended with the next sound of a word


PRACTICE WORDS


  • Beginning h sound: He-her-his-have-here-hang-house-hundred-happened-hormones-holidays

  • Medial h sound: Anyhow- rehearsal-behind-neighbourhood


RECITATION DRILL


He happens to hear a hoot

To hurry up to uphill house

He holds his hat in his hands

He is happy to hug his spouse
