Make mental health care a reality for people worldwide: WHO

Each year, the World Mental Health Day (October 10) is observed with an objective 'to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilize efforts in support of mental health.' According to the WHO, the observance 'provides an opportunity for all stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work, and what more needs to be done to .' This the theme of the observance is "Mental health care for all: let’s make it a reality" while the last year the theme was "Move for mental health: let’s invest."

On this ocassion, I would like to reproduce my write-up of 2019, which remains relevant even to day. The article earlier published in slideshare is not availavle on the site now, which had focused on raising awareness of the scale of suicide around the world and the role that each of us could play to help prevent it. It goes as follows.

“Worldwide, 800,000 people die by suicide each year - one every 40 seconds - making it the second leading cause of death among young people (aged 15 to 29), the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday, spotlighting suicide prevention as the theme for this year's World Mental Health Day, stated WHO."

UN chief in his message stated that mental health had been neglected for too long which was needed to be addressed urgently since it concerned us all.“We need stronger investments in services. And we must not allow stigma to push people away from the assistance they need. I am speaking my mind because I care deeply” he said, “there is no health, without mental health.”
