Short Note
To develop vertical literacy skills, one must make a significant transition from traditional, surface-level content consumption or rote memorization. The goal is to elevate from basic rote learning or simply memorizing facts to achieving a transformative understanding of problems and challenges in order to find effective solutions. Unlike the horizontal and superficial knowledge, becoming vertically literate involves focusing on enhancing one's mental operating system.
Efforts have been made to shift the mindset from an ego-system to an eco-system awareness to address systemic issues. This shift necessitates the practice and mastery of systems thinking skills, which involves recognizing complex patterns within the system by cultivating self-awareness and promoting action learning, or learning through experience, to close the knowing-doing gap.
This process requires moving beyond merely acquiring information to grasping the "why" and "how" behind challenges, empowering oneself to lead change instead of just consuming information.
Ode to Vertical Thinking Ascent
No more flat lands, memorized and bare,
But climbing high, a different, fresher air.
Forget the rote, the facts laid side by side,
Raise thinking to , where truest wisdom hides.
Upgrade your mind, the system starts anew,
From selfish "me" to all of life, for you.
See patterns woven, intricate and grand,
Thinking mind high, a helping, guiding hand.
Learn by the doing, bridge the knowing's wall,
Understand the "why," before you heed the call.
Lead change, don't follow, let your spirit soar,
Vertical ascent, forevermore.
A problem posed, a plan to seize,
Vertical thinking brings inner ease.
From root to tip, a solid line,
Solutions bloom, so crisp and fine.
