Making use of aluminium foil for fine motor skills instead of Plasticine or play dough: An example

Developing fine motor skills through making mud, dough, plasticine, or paper balls had been common in pre-schools. As an alternative to these messy materials, an attempt was made to make a CWSN to create a ball through aluminium foil by finger movements and sensory play in early learning as a therapeutic intervention.

The intervention was carried out in the following steps as shown in the inset video:

  1. Demonstration by the teacher as interventionist

  2. Assisted learning by the child

  3. Practice by the child

  4. Staggered deep learning practice in institution and at home

  5. Free play with the created balls

At least a five-hour staggered practice is required to reshape the micro-muscles of the fingers and acquire appropriate fine motor skills.

However, it should be born in mind that gross motor development should be appropriated attained before fine motor interventions.
