Atheism represents a way of life characterized by the absence of belief, faith, and religious systems, marked by a direct rejection of the existence of any deities or imposed rituals, rites, and dictates. Atheists prioritize scientific rationalism, humanism, and secular ethics as foundations for leading a rational life. They believe that humanity can collaboratively create ethical standards and codes of conduct independently of divine guidance.
In his essay "Why I Am an Atheist," composed in Lahore Jail, Bhagat Singh characterized his atheism not as a temporary whim, but as a profoundly rational, intellectual, and revolutionary viewpoint. He dismissed the idea of a divine, all-powerful creator, questioning why a supreme God would permit widespread injustice and suffering in the world. For Singh, atheism was essential for liberating human thought from the constraints of superstitions and dogma, urging individuals to fully accept responsibility for their actions and depend on human effort and struggle instead of divine intervention.
He contended that genuine freedom arises from inquiry and reasoning, rather than from blind belief. He maintained that human advancement relies entirely on human endeavor and active, revolutionary action. In various religious practices, he perceived God as a tool used by oppressors to keep the oppressed compliant.
He had a significant impact of radical literature on him, which reinforced his determination to combat British imperialism without seeking spiritual or religious solace, signifying a transition towards armed struggle for freedom.
Rational Atheism: A Poem
A quiet thought, a turning tide,
No gods above, no place to hide.
No ancient book, no whispered prayer,
But reason's light, to be just 'n fair.
No heavenly rule, no fiery wrath,
Just human steps along the path.
Let evidence, be guide and friend,
Struggle to very, final end.
A world unveiled, by reason grand,
A humanistic, ethical stand.
Let's forge a world, fair, just, and kind,
With open minds, and efforts aligned.
Must gain freedom, and seek the good,
In brotherhood, as humans should.
With ethics born of logic, clear and bright.
To build a future bathed in honest light.
