In English, there a many words with silent letters which cause difficulties for second and third language learners whose home language is different than English. In the words with silent letters, some letters do not correlate to any sound of English alphabet when certain particular words are spoken.
Most difficulty is faced regarding silent vowel sound of /u/ but such words few as far as the the speaking of daily life language is concerned. The pronunciation of the words with silent ‘u’ can be masters by devoting a few hours of practice. Often silent letters help in differentiating the homophones – the words that same pronunciation but have different spellings.
