In academic and technical communication, signal verbs provide context to a sentence to indicate view, agreement, causes, results, conclusion, etc.
AT times, signal verb in the first part of the sentence provides the clue about the second part of sentence.
In other words, signal verbs or signal phrasal verbs to provide logical transition between two parts of a sentence or from one sentence to another are words and phrases as well as providing connection between two or more ideas. At times signal words are also called transition words.
In writing a research paper, a signal verb or phrase indicated that writer is paraphrasing or quoting or citing an idea from someone else's work or another sources. Thus signal phrase provides the source from which work is being cited.
