Medical Physics: Definition and ABCs of interdisciplinary knowledge area

International Day of Medical Physics is observed on the 7th November by the medical physicists across the world. It would be appropriate to get aware of this area of knowledge and career in the medicine and healthcare sector.

The International Organization for Medical Physics (IOMF) defines Medical Physics as a 'branch of applied physics, pursued by medical physicists, that uses physics principles, methods and techniques in practice and research for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of human diseases with a specific goal of improving human health and well-being.'

ABCs of MEDICAL PHYSICS

A: Application of Physics concepts, theories, and methods to medicine or healthcare

B: Branch of physics pursued by medical physicists with expertise in bio-physics, radiation oncology and imaging physics

C: Combination of physics, biology and medicine for treatment and health care

D: Diagnosis, prevents and treatment of disease through techniques and concepts of physics

E: Enhancing support to healthcare workers in the safe diagnosis and radiation based treatment of patients
