National Mathematics Day: Math Genius Ramanujam remembered & interventions for dycalculics urged

"Children with dyscalculia have mathematics learning disability - at times also called number dyslexia- which impairs their ability to learn number-related concepts, perform arithmetic operations, do calculations and understand logic or reasoning. On National Mathematics Day, we must resolve to create special learning material in mathematics for children with mild dyscalculia leading to mathematics literacy; handling money and doing calculations involving operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division involving two-digit numbers," stated Jaipur based educator Dr Lalit Kishore, who had recently won the Commonwealth Award for his innovation on language of mathematics.

Sri Prakash Vidyaniketan, Visakhapatnam, celebrated National Mathematics Day last year on December 22 and its director Chitturi Vasu Prakash remembered the math genius by sending greetings to friends, educators and researchers.

Since 2012, the Indian mathematics day is being observed in the 22nd December each year. The observance was declared on the occasion of the celebrations to mark the 125th anniversary of the birth of mathematical genius Srinivasa Ramanujan.

"I convey my warm greetings on National Mathematics Day today. Celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of well-known mathematician, Shri Srinivasa Ramanujan, the day offers us an occasion to remember the tradition of excellence. #nationalmathematicsday," stated the Vice President Venkaiah Naidu in his tweet.

According to Wikiquote, Srinivasa Aiyangar Ramanujan FRS (1887-1920) was an Indian mathematician and autodidact who worked as a clerk in the Accounts Department of the Port Trust Office at Madras, but due to his high mathematical-logical intelligence become a noted for his extraordinary achievements in the field of mathematical analysis, number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions.

"In his uniquely self-developed mathematical research he not only rediscovered known theorems but also produced brilliant new work, prompting his mentor G. H. Hardy to compare his brilliance to that of Euler and Gauss. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society, and India now observes his birthday as National Mathematics Day," informs the post Wkikiquote.

Many interventionists have worked on illustrated language of mathematics and use of visuals for children with mild and moderate dyscalculia. In the beginning, intervention for such children should based visual math learning with proper phonically sound use of language of mathematics, suggested Dr Kishore
